Maboneng Arty Kids

-->

We provide education through the creative arts to children of all ages in a couple of spaces in the Maboneng Precinct in downtown Johannesburg. We use the power of the arts to help students navigate a clear path that is often cluttered with the realities and collateral of extreme poverty, including gang violence, HIV/AIDS, and physical and substance abuse.

Through our arts curriculum and critical messaging component, we ignite imagination and teach children how to map and manifest their dreams and goals, launching the possibility of a different future for themselves and their communities. Art crosses all language and cultural barriers. It is a fun way to learn, as there is no right or wrong in art. This encourages persistence in learning, which in turn helps in developing a child’s grit and self-confidence.

Our programs create permanent change with positive outlooks, community role models and the mindset for our students to design a more certain future for themselves and their communities.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to work closely with children of all ages in a supported and professional classroom environment.

As the teacher’s assistant your help is needed in various areas; from feeding little ones, facilitating ECD early child development programs through fun and games.
Playing sport and entertaining children. Our African culture is full of song and dance; you will find it contagious.

Afternoons:
Every day after-school, in the hours when children are most vulnerable to abuse of every kind, we work to break the barriers of challenge. We start early (age 6) in developing the art of imagination and we continue through grade 12 to connect the arts to everything important in a child's life, from core academics to critical life skills. In our classrooms, through our specialized programs and our community art, we engage at-risk youth in educational arts to spark creative thinking and awaken the entrepreneurial spirit.

The afternoons are spent at the youth centre Duties include preparing materials and helping the teachers and facilitators to create new ideas of learning. Creating themes and topic can be real fun, let those creative juices flow … Preparing lunch for the kids and generally doing whatever teacher wants you to do in preparation for the children’s arrival.

Highlights:
Empowering young children through education and art Empowerment and self-development Meeting people, learning about other cultures, gaining an understanding of the challenges facing the majority of South African youth
