ABOUT US

Iwas sitting on a deck overlooking the great Lake of Malawi and as I listened to the volunteers chattering amongst themselves, I heard them sharing their stories and experiences about travelling and contributing to make this world a better place, which essentially not only fed their insatiable desire to travel and explore but, also fed the soul, they were making a difference and it made them feel good. Being able to travel and give back, that’s when the light bulb moment happened.

Hero Holidays was born, everyone that comes on our programmes is a hero. I wanted to create a voluntourism organization that could service all my philanthropic endeavors. This is my passion; people and my country, South Africa, being able to offer an experience of a lifetime, a meaningful vacation while giving back.

This was truly the moment when Hero Holidays’ Volunteer vision was born. Our voluntourism holidays exist to address basic community challenges, basic but vital needs, things you and I may take for granted everyday.

Hero Holidays offers the opportunity for you to work alongside us, through our projects you will learn about the diversity that is the rainbow nation, our multicultural country offers many unique experiences. Hero Holidays helps with teaching our children, building basic amenities and sustainable farming that are vital to development.

The mission of Hero Holidays is to offer a true meaningful and sustainable African experience while enhancing life for our people from previously disadvantaged communities, building our local communities, one brick at a time, connecting and changing lives, one act of kindness at a time. Correcting the injustices that was the apartheid era.

Building Communities – We build relationships with people of our communities, becoming intrenched in their lives and culture. Meaningful and sustainable experiences that are good for the soul. While we work hard, building communities, we also play hard, offering down time traveling with our partners, exploring what our beautiful country has to offer such as iconic Table Mountain in Cape Town to the safaris in the Kruger Park.

Kindness – We always operate from a space of kindness, kindness is free.

Code Of Conduct

Hero Holidays is fully committed to responsible volunteer travel and sustainable tourism. This code of conduct is designed to help you achieve the most of your placement in a safe manner. It also ensures that the organizations and the people we work with are treated with respect and that consideration is given to other cultures.

1.1 Make use of your Support worker, who knows your area very well, and is there to support you.
1.2. Understand that you represent not only Hero Holidays but also your country of origin.
1.3. Realize that Hero Holidays has a zero tolerance policy towards the possession and use of illegal substances. If you are found in possession of, or are under the influence of such substances, you will be removed from the volunteer program immediately. 1.4. It is a breach of your visa’s conditions to take on any form of employment involving earning money and if you do this could result in you being immediately deported.
1.5. Respect, and seek to understand the culture of the country that you are placed in. This involves being tolerant to varying approaches, including customs regarding the consumption of alcohol.
1.6. Be aware of different attitudes towards sexual relationships. Be extremely vigilant with your own health, South Africa has an incredibly high level of HIV/AIDS positive people.
1.7. Treat all people with respect and dignity.
1.8. Dress appropriately at all times with regard to the culture you are living in.
1.9. Do not engage in political demonstrations or illegal activities.
1.10.Understand that the project and accommodation booked is non-changeable in the country without the prior approval of Hero Holidays Head Office.
1.11. Keep your support worker informed of your plans concerning trips out of Town.
1.12. Open door policy: Should a volunteer have or foresee a problem that may interfere with their commitment or ability to adequately perform their responsibilities, that volunteer should immediately discuss the matter with their support worker or another member of the Hero Holidays staff. The Staff is always available to discuss any changes or problems.
2.1. Keep a positive mental attitude throughout your placement.
2.2. Be a team player with other volunteers and the staff at project. You are relied upon as a dedicated member of staff –without volunteers most projects can’t operate.
2.3. Abide by the rules of the project at which you are working and respect them.
2.4. Do not accept payment of any kind for the work that you are doing.
2.5. Work hard to achieve your own personal goals, but also those of the project.
2.6. Listen to and follow the instructions of your supervisor at the project.
2.7. Inform your supervisor at the project if you are at any time unable to fulfil the duties to which you have committed yourself.
2.8. Be careful with all materials and equipment that you use during your placement.
3.1. Respect local customs & abide by rules of the accommodation where you’re staying.
3.2. Check with the Host Family/Accommodation Manager before inviting anybody to visit.
3.3. Be aware that overnight visitors are strictly not allowed.
3.4. Respect the accommodation you’re using and pay for any damage that you cause to the property.
3.5. Keep your room clean and tidy.
3.6. Do not smoke in your accommodation.
3.7. Stay at the accommodation allocated to you. You are not allowed to make your own accommodation arrangements for security reasons.
3.8. Settle any outstanding bills before leaving the accommodation.
3.9. There will be no refunds for food or accommodation if you decide to go on trips or leave early.
Please note that breaches of the code of conduct may result in your placement being terminated without compensation.
